KFC ANIMAL WELFARE PROGRAM TIMELINE

2001

  • January -- KFC helps establish a cross-industry steering committee that will direct the National Council of Chain Restaurants (NCCR) and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) in developing industry-wide comprehensive animal welfare guidelines
  • June 15 - Initial meeting with Dr. Temple Grandin to establish a KFC's animal welfare strategy
  • July/August - Interview & selection of Animal Welfare Advisory Council members. Council established
  • September 10 - Initial meeting of full Council
  • October 1 - Second meeting of full Council
  • October 1-29 - Council members review KFC processing guidelines and National Chicken Council (NCC) guidelines. One-on-one phone conversations with Council members to answer questions, clarify points
  • October 29 - Council members submit written comments on KFC processing guidelines and NCC guidelines
  • November 15 - Council input on NCC farm-level guidelines submitted for inclusion in the NCCR/FMI process
  • December 15 - Finalized KFC processing guidelines submitted via email to Council
  • December 31 - KFC processing guidelines adopted
2002
  • January - March - KFC meets with its suppliers to implement processing guidelines and communicate that failure to comply could result in termination
  • March 5 - Dr. Grandin conducts full-day training session with KFC QA auditors
  • May 9 - All KFC supplier facilities complete self-audits
  • May 13 - Unannounced audits begin - Dr. Grandin accompanies KFC auditors on many
  • June 26 - Full Council meets to discuss six specific items that PETA asked to have reviewed
  • July 17- KFC President Cheryl Bachelder sends letter to National Chicken Council asking that it negotiate in good faith with the NCCR-FMI animal welfare advisory council to develop industry-wide farm level guidelines for poultry
  • August 6 - Dr. Grandin and KFC audit team meet to discuss YTD results of poultry audits, make mid-course corrections, and schedule BOY audit plan
  • December, 2001 - All KFC suppliers have received initial audits at their processing facilities
2003
  • January 20 - Dr. Grandin and KFC team conduct audit of processing facility in North Carolina
  • February 1 - KFC and Dr. Grandin establish a balance of year audit plan
  • May - NCCR/FMI farm-level poultry welfare guidelines are finalized and KFC becomes first QSR company to adopt the standards.
Going Forward
  • May 21 - KFC team audits supplier facility in AL and reviews results with Dr. Grandin
  • May - July - KFC suppliers implement new farm-level guidelines
  • July 22-23 - Dr. Grandin and KFC team conduct comprehensive, farm-level audit of supplier in AR
  • October - KFC team audits supplier facility and reviews results with Dr. Grandin
